Through the songs, the Mayorgas wend their way from America's mountaintops, to the ballads and be-bop of the city, and into the storm of American politics.

Con Brio
KARL ULRICH SCHNABEL: MASTER TEACHER OF PIANO

Schnabel (1909-2001), the son of famed pianist Artur Schnabel, began playing piano at the age of five and made his concert debut in 1926. In the following decades, he pursued a brilliant solo career as well as reviving the piano duo tradition, first performing four-hands with his father, then his American wife, Helen Fogel, and later with Joan Rowland. During his long career, he was also the teacher of several of the great pianists of our time, including Leon Fleisher, Peter Serkin, Richard Goode and Claude Frank.

This video includes biographical material about the Schnabel family, comments by Schnabel’s famous former students, and concentrates on Schnabel's later years as a master teacher. "Con Brio" is a musical term meaning spiritual fire, a cornerstone of Schnabel's teaching. The effect of this passion upon both pupil and audience is deeply moving. Schnabel also possessed a special genius to teach what most believe to be unteachable--musicality. Through the power of his dedication and example, he touched thousands during his remarkable life and career.

On The Wrong Side of the Railroad Tracks
Sheri Bauer-Mayorga

This TownHall CD is a compilation of songs that arise when confronting political, social, racial, economic, or spiritual "railroad tracks" or boundaries. The twelve tracks include songs by each of the Mayorgas, Duke Ellington, Ewan MacColl, Dorsey Dixon and traditional songs in original arrangements.

This collaboration with husband, Lincoln Mayorga, as pianist and producer, has turned out an original and beautifully transparent sounding recording. Instrumentation includes vocals, guitar, and accordion by Sheri Bauer-Mayorga, Lincoln Mayorga on piano, Pete Toigo on bass, Jeff Kraus on percussion and Trevor Caldwell on Low D whistle. The town of Chatham, New York makes a guest appearance on one tune with its local marching bands, the 2002 Chatham Fair, the local espresso bar, and the mayor's barking beagle.

Opus 1 No. 1
Nascence and Child
The Very Us Artists

The theme of this album is "beginnings": the dawn, the pioneers, the flash of a newborn star. It is the point of origin, the genesis of some thing yet unknown. It is the first step down that shadowed path, into that hitherto undiscovered land. It is all of these things. Or it is none of them. What it is shall be left up to you and how you interpret these creations. The calm has broken, and the storm is upon us.

This is square one, where it all begins, that place to which we can never return... not truly, not ever quite the same. What lies herein explores the concept of beginnings, innocent, insular or singular. The Very Us Artists has cracked open the board and laid out the pieces. Roll the dice or draw a card. It's your turn now.

Parnas Double

Cicely Parnas, cello

This debut recording for the Parnas Duo, Madalyn Parnas, violin and Cicely Parnas, cello, features well-known and well-loved staples of the 20th Century and a few delightful discoveries. Duos by Kodaly and Ravel, the giants of this sparse repertoire, are obviously included. But you may consider adding the Tcherepnin Duo written in 1932 to this short list after hearing this enchanting and often beautifully lyrical piece with its driving folk dance rhythms and energy. The romantic Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia and a truly charismatic string duet by Jonah Thomas composed before and after the 20th century respectively, complete the listening adventure.

Piano Music of Chopin, Brahms & Prokofiev

A fresh and brilliant recording of a cornerstone of romantic piano literature, the Twenty-four Preludes of Frederic Chopin. Schubert: Sonata in C Major "Grand Duo" (Op. 140)
Variations on an original theme in B flat Major (D. 603)
Joan Rowland
Karl Ulrich Schnabel

This is the 1983 debut album of Joan Rowland and Karl Ulrich Schnabel as Duo Schnabel. Schubert's Grand Duo is a towering masterpiece for one piano, four hands. The work has the proportions and the quality of a major symphony. It is surely no less important than any of Schubert's symphonies, and the Duo Schnabel performs the piece in this recording with an orchestral approach, without sacrificing the pianistic sonorities. The Variations in B flat are light-hearted, charming, and brilliantly conceived for the piano.

The Snow Queen is an eclectic, yet cohesive blend of sounds and styles, mixing acoustic instruments and voices with electronically generated textures and soundscapes, written by new-music composer, John LaSala. The music was originally commissioned to accompany the Off-Off Broadway modern dance-theater piece of the same name.

Doug DeVita from Off-Off Broadway Review comments, "LaSala's vibrant, eclectic score is always sensitive to the icy hot moods of the story, not afraid to sacrifice melody for dramatic thrust. It is also ravishing; a witty and lush marriage of romance and minimalism."
